A new study highlights how combining fishers’ local ecological knowledge with scientific research can improve understanding and management of Atlantic herring populations. Working with fishers around the Magdalen Islands in Canada, researchers identified key spawning habitats, timing, and locations that had previously been poorly documented after the collapse of an important spawning ground. The findings show that local observations—combined with scientific monitoring—can help fill critical knowledge gaps and support more effective fisheries conservation and management.
