Protected sex: Grouper mating calls in marine managed areas

Groupers exhibit unique sounds linked to courtship, territory marking, and reproduction. Utilizing an autonomous mobile wave glider along with passive acoustics, a survey was conducted in two marine protected zones off Puerto Rico’s western shelf to identify spawning gatherings of two commercially valued species—the Nassau and red hind groupers. The results revealed that these areas are vital habitats for both species, and uncovered several previously undiscovered grouper species, emphasizing the need to broaden the current seasonal regulations.
