Palolo spawning in Samoa

All the elements of a magical story: How palolo appear in the dead of night for a few days a year!

“Coral, fish and shellfish also spawn at this time and larvae feed on eggs and larvae of other animals to survive,” said Magele Etuati Ropeti from Samoa’s Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF).

Under a waning moon this weekend, these ocean worms will detach their lower half and a set off a mass synchronised spawning event. Careful tradition will be observed as Samoans hunt for their share of the delicacy. Read the full story here
