About Us

The Society for the Conservation of Reef Fish Aggregations (SCRFA) was formed to raise awareness about the vulnerability of reef fish spawning aggregations and work towards their better protection and management.

We work towards these goals through our participation in the scientific, conservation and resource management communities by producing a diverse range of written and visual materials, participation in workshops, international meetings, committees and other relevant forums.

On 21 June 2000, La Paz, Mexico, was the venue for a symposium entitled “The Importance of Spawning Aggregations in the Lives of Reef Fishes”. The symposium, as part of the annual meeting of the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists, drew experts from around the world's oceans. It was the first opportunity in many years for scientists working on aggregations to gather and share their knowledge and experience and jointly identify impacts on aggregations noted around the tropics. This gathering was the catalyst for the establishment of a formal partnership – SCRFA.

The SCRFA has a Board of eight members; Patrick L. Colin, Michael Domeier, Terry J. Donaldson, Janet Gibson, Brian E. Luckhurst, Martin Russell, Yvonne Sadovy and Sebastian Troeng, whose biographies are available. We also have a membership of about three hundreds, among them biologists, conservationists, fishery managers, educators, fishers and communicators.
